Masterchef judge Melissa Leong: Style My Way

How Melissa Leong's wedding channelled her favourite fashion decade

What is your favourite obsolete decade?
The ’60s. There’s such a great sense of fun and cheekiness about it.

And favourite fashion designer?
I love Prada.

What are three essential items in your wardrobe?
Gucci “Marmont” black velvet ankle boots with the gold buckle, a leather jacket and a limited-edition Akubra. Great accessories can make or break an outfit.

Do you have a favourite fragrance?
I’ve given up searching for a signature scent. It’s like the pursuit of the perfect recipe, you can never have just one. I look for perfumes that have a jasmine note, my husband’s favourite. At the moment it’s Jo Malone Jasmine Sambac & Marigold and Le Labo Jasmin 17.

Do you remember a favourite outfit you had as a child?
I played piano competitively from the age of four and Mum made this amazing concert outfit for me. I looked like a little doll: cinched-in waist with a full skirt and puff sleeve. I loved it. It gave me the confidence to sit up in front of hundreds of people and play piano all by myself.

What would you buy if money were no object?
A Goyard “GM” green tote.

What shoes do you wear most often?
Heels for MasterChef – I’m five-foot-two [157cm]. Leopard-print Aquazzura platform sandals and a pair of emerald green silk Manolos with an unapologetically huge Swarovski buckle – life’s too short for sleek black pumps. On a daily basis, I’m a big fan of the Birkenstock “Arizona”.

Do you have a style muse?
I admire anyone who has a strong sense of who they are, people like Tilda Swinton, Marilyn Manson, Jane Birkin and Iris Apfel.

Can you remember your worst fashion mistake?
In the ’90s I wanted to be Björk: tie-dye crushed velvet slip dresses, silver lipstick, space buns, the whole thing.

And a big fashion moment?
In 2017, I eloped to Joshua Tree, in California, with my husband. I wore a powder-blue ’60s shift dress and pink silk Charlotte Olympia stilettos in the desert; it was very rock’n’roll. Joe looked so handsome in his suit with open shirt and white carnation, and I just felt like me. On your wedding day you should really feel like yourself, except maybe a little extra. It was magical.
