Kalamazoo bridal shop reopens and owner says it feels 'fabulous'

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Adrienne Wissner and her staff sanitized and cleaned her shop Memories Bridal and Evening Wearin downtown Kalamazoo all day Tuesday.
And, not once did she remove her mask.
“That was a little weird,” Wissner said during an interview with FOX 17 about wearing a mask all day. “It’s going to take some getting used to but it was so good being back with our staff. It was so good getting dressed up for the first time today in two months.”
Wednesday, Wissner reopened her bridal shop after being closed for two months due to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's stay-at-home executive order.
The store opened at 11 a.m. and within an hour a bride was trying on wedding gowns and modeling them for her family.

A bride, a groom and a booking … but no big day for lovers in lockdown | Life and style | The Guardian

A bride, a groom and a booking … but no big day for lovers in lockdown | Life and style

Across Britain, would-be newlyweds are frantically making adjustments to wedding plans thrown into disarray by the worldwide pandemic.
Some are rescheduling for later in the year, hoping that the lockdown will ease in time for their big day. Others have postponed until next year to allow the recovery to take hold.
Wedding planners, in tandem with the owners of venues, are working flat out to help.
Sarah Brookfield-Almond, group director of James’ Places, which runs five wedding venues in Lancashire and north Yorkshire, is concerned about a likely concertina effect as thousands of 2020 brides try to switch to next year.
She also points to varying guidance from county council registrars around the country. In Lancashire, she says, registrars have warned that they don’t expect to be conducting ceremonies until September. “It’s less than helpful to have made the decision so early.”

Virus Outbreak: Taipei urges people to aid disabled through workshops

The Taipei City Government yesterday encouraged people to buy from the city’s sheltered workshops, which have suffered significant revenue losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, to aid people with disabilities.
Taipei Deputy Mayor Vivian Huang (黃珊珊) told a news conference at Taipei City Hall that there are 43 sheltered workshops in the city employing about 600 people with disabilities, the most among the nation’s cities and counties, adding that the workshops provide a safe environment for them to learn job skills and become self-reliant.
The Taipei Department of Labor said that as the pandemic has changed many people’s lifestyles, such as staying at home rather than eating out or going shopping, sales at the workshops’ gas stations, souvenir shops and bakeries have dropped over the past few months.

Bridal Bliss: Madeliene And Jasson's Miami Wedding - Essence

Bridal Bliss: Madeliene And Jasson's Miami Wedding

Prior to meeting her forever, dating wasn’t going the way Madeliene, a Jacksonville-based physician, had hoped. Thanks to the OWN Network dating show Lovetown, USA she got inspired to advance out to the Paul C. Brunson (PCB) matchmaking agency to take dating matters into her own hands. That’s when she was introduced to Paul’s personal friend Jasson. She was initially expecting a few dates at most, but Madeliene said this was a decision that “ended up changing the trajectory of my life.”
Though they started off dated long-distance, a trip to Las Vegas solidified their compatibility. “We made each other a priority and figured out a way to make living apart for two years work until she decided to move to Maryland,” says Jasson. “I am forever grateful for her uprooting her life in Florida to be closer to me.”
After two and a half years of dating, he proposed and the wedding planning began immediately. The decisive bride knew she didn’t want to duplicate any venues she’d attended in her hometown of Jacksonville. And since Miami had been a favorite travel destination for the couple, they decided it was the perfect city for their wedding bash. “I love to travel and wanted to force my guests to take a trip,” says Madeliene. “I love to share once in a lifetime level experiences with those in my circle.”
Check out the most glorious photos from Madeliene and Jasson’s Miami wedding.

Chinchilla girls feature in new wedding cake book

A CAKE decorator of 50-years, Mary Reid, has gathered many stories about cakes, people and events during that time.
Persistent encouragement from her friends to write a book was the right ingredient which led her to publishing Caution! Cake on board.
Establishing Merivale Cakes and Crafts, community development has been at the heart of Ms Reid’s endeavours, so when her adventures brought her to Chinchilla, it was a major highlight for her and featured heavily in the book.
Ms Reid taught students who would drive up to fice hours to her workshops.
They were held twice a year over two days and she would bring in international trainers tp impact their knowledge.
Throughout the seven years she taught them, they became known as the ‘Chinchilla Girls’ which ignited long-lasting friendships, new businesses and international training programs.

Bookish cakes: from Proust to Barbara Pym | Spectator Life

Bookish cakes: from Proust to Barbara Pym

When the smug posts about using the lockdown to read Proust began popping up on Instagram, I notion of that quip about the most famous cake in literature.
I think it was Nora Ephron who said there’s a reason everyone’s heard of Proust’s madeleine — because it’s in the first chapter.
Few of us have made it past the opening pages of Swann’s Way, yet these plump little sponge cakes that look ‘as if they were moulded in the fluted scallop of a pilgrim’s shell’ have become one of the most well-known metaphors in literature.
Literary cakes are a comforting and convenient conduit to a supposedly happier, simpler time. For the exiled de Winters in Rebecca, the cakes that formed the centrepiece of afternoon tea at Manderley are recalled longingly: ‘… that very special gingerbread. Angel cake, that melted in the mouth, and his rather stodgier companion, bursting with peel and raisins’.
Delectable descriptions abound in children’s literature: the Famous Five guzzling ginger cake, Alice sampling the bun with ‘Eat Me’ marked out in currants, the Queen of Hearts and her tarts.
They are a marker of location, too, often by their absence. No tea-time treats for The Railway Children: ‘Jam OR butter, dear, not jam AND butter,’ counsels their mother, ‘We can’t afford that sort of reckless luxury now!’ Cassandra in I Capture the Castle laments that whereas tea once meant ‘little cakes’ in the drawing room, it now consists of margarine and bread in the kitchen, due to their father’s reduced circumstances.
A Madeline dipped in tea has become a Proustian trope.

When Is the Right Time to Choose Your Wedding Cake Design? | Martha Stewart Weddings

When Is the Right Time to Choose Your Wedding Cake Design?

Cake tasting is arguably every couple's favorite part of the wedding planning process. But how many cakes can you taste before having to buckle down and make some decisions? We talked with Kimberly Bailey, owner of The Butter End Cakery, to learn when couples should select their wedding cake flavor and design, and how to ensure they go about making the right choice.
The suited step to selecting a wedding cake is determining the overall feel or theme of your wedding day so that the cake design goes with the aesthetic you're going for. If you're planning a destination wedding on a beach, for example, you may want to incorporate beachy details like seashells or the color blue into the cake design. If you're going for an elegant feel, you might choose a classic tiered white cake design embellished with sparkles or florals.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will celebrate their second wedding anniversary on Tuesday — and the date isn't going by without some very sweet memories.
Claire Ptak, the pastry chef who created the "quintessentially spring and British" floral cake for the royal wedding two years ago, is looking back on one of the highlights of her career.

In another post shared on the same day, Ptak praised her team of bakers that made the dreamy confection a reality.
"My dream team," Ptak wrote alongside a photo of the group, who wore uniforms made by Sunspel Clothing for the special day. "Can’t believe this was two years ago. I love these bakers so much. It was an epic challenge and we nailed it."
The team of bakers spent five days baking and icing each tier of the cake in Buckingham Palace before transporting those tiers individually to Windsor Castle for on-site assembly the morning before the reception. The ingredients list included 200 Amalfi lemons, 500 organic eggs from Suffolk, 20 kgs of butter, 20 kgs of flour, 20 kgs of sugar and 10 bottles of Sandringham elderflower cordial.

Bride-to-be dies, wedding photographer refuses refund | WSAV-TV

Bride-to-be dies, wedding photographer refuses refund

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (WSAV) – A young bride from Colorado Springs was killed in a car accident just three months before she was set to walk down the aisle. Now, her fiancee has been left to grieve her loss and cancel their wedding plans.
Alexis Wyatt, 22, died in February. Her wedding would have been May 23. Her fiancee, Justin Montney, is picking up the pieces and the financial fallout from their wedding that never happened.
Wyatt signed a contract with a photography company called Copper Stallion Media to take their wedding video and gave them $1,800. Now, they are refusing a refund for Montney.
“They said they’d extend my service to my next wedding, which was a very insensitive thing to tell me,” Montney said.
When Montney’s friends heard that, they posted dozens of bad reviews all over Copper Stallion’s page on The Knot, a popular wedding planning website.
Montney says he knew they had a contract saying no refunds would be given, but he thinks, under the rare circumstances, the company should honor his request.
“Which they should have been able to do, cause they didn’t render any services,” Montney said.
Local station KRDO reached out to Copper Stallion to get their side of the story, but the company did not acknowledge to any phone calls or e-mails. The company is reportedly threatening to sue Montney for defamation.

Paul Feig talks tonal decision to make a "true monster movie"

Paul Feig talks tonal decision to make a "true monster movie"

Paul Feig has explained his tonal decision to make a "true monster movie".
The Bridesmaids director is currently in the process of writing a script for Dark Army, which is a monster film unofficially spawned from Universal Pictures' pretty much abandoned Dark Universe.
Like Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man, Dark Army will feature monsters from within the universe but unlike The Invisible Man — which turned out to be a thriller/horror hybrid with a scientific edge — Dark Army will be a film "about outsiders" and also a "true monster movie".

The 11 best blockbuster movies to watch over Memorial Day weekend - Polygon

The 11 best blockbuster movies to watch over Memorial Day weekend

Summer blockbusters may be on hold this year, but that doesn’t mean that your movie-watching summer is ruined. Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start to the season and while we’re all staying indoors, it’s a great time to revisit some of the summer blockbusters of yesteryear.
First, some history: Steven Spielberg is credited with inventing the summer blockbuster with Jaws. Audiences used to measuring their summers in release dates for big franchise movies may be surprised to learn that the summer was considered a box-office dead zone until the mid-1970s. Studios assumed that families would rather head to the pool than the multiplex, but lines around the block to get into Jaws proved them wrong. Then two years later, a little film called Star Wars was released, confirming the summer blockbuster hypothesis and changing the movie industry forever.
From megahit franchises to family comedies, summer is the time for flashy, crowd-pleasing, (usually) expensive cinema. We’ve rounded up some of the best summer blockbusters of the last four decades that you can stream right now, from the OGs like Jaws and Star Wars, to modern classics like Bridesmaids and Inception. And yes, plenty of superhero movies.

Bridesmaids Sequel from Paul Feig Won’t Happen | IndieWire

Bridesmaids Sequel from Paul Feig Won’t Happen

Though Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids” scored more than $288 million at the worldwide box office back in 2011, becoming a comedy classic and inspiring many an imitation of the film’s winning formula, a sequel likely won’t be happening. Feig explained why that is in an interview with Collider about his career, which most recently includes executive-producing the upcoming HBO Max series “Love Life” via his Feigco Entertainment.
“Everybody thinks they want a ‘Bridesmaids’ sequel, and it could be fun, but I always have to say this,” Feig said. “‘Bridesmaids’ works — you remember all the comedy stuff, that was great, but the reason that movie worked is because it was about Kristen Wiig’s character, who was a very confident person before the movie began, who has this total crash because her bakery goes out of business and everything falls apart in her life. So we meet her and she’s a disaster. She’s desperately trying to hang onto this one thing, which is her friendship with Maya Rudolph’s character, and that takes her through the fire.”

Formula E Talking Points: Rowland spoils Germany party; ‘Bridesmaid’ Vandoorne still waiting - Formula E

The ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge in support of UNICEF returned this Saturday, with Nissan’s Oliver Rowland taking victory on a virtual Berlin Tempelhof circuit.

Here’s all the talking points from Round Five:

Abt fined for comical 'ringer' in Race at Home Challenge

Nissan e.dams’ Oliver Rowland broke the roam of German winners to derive a debut victory in the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge in a dramatic fifth round on the Tempelhof track in Berlin.
With the simulator racing series dominated to date by German duo Maximilian Guenther and Pascal Wehrlein, the British driver noxious the party to become the first non-German winner of the championship, in his rivals’ own backyard.
Rowland triumphed in the second round of the BRDC Esports Championship at Monza earlier this week and made it two online race wins in a sensational few days for the 27-year-old.
A fourth-placed finish sees Wehrlein remain top of the driver standings on 82 points, however the German’s lead has been cut to just four points, with Stoffel Vandoorne taking second place on 78 points and Guenther third on 71 points after a crash left him eighth.

‘Bridesmaid’ Vandoorne unruffled awaiting first victory

Mercedes-Benz EQ’s Vandoorne has shown his sim racing pedigree in various championships in recent weeks but is fast becoming the bridesmaid of the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge.
The Belgian has claimed Julius Baer Pole Position in three of the five races staged to date but is yet to record a victory and continued that trend on Saturday with a second-placed finish after leading.
Having started on pole, Vandoorne survived the tricky first corner but lost his lead early in the race to Abt and could never get back in front.

Why Bridesmaids 2 Probably Shouldn't Happen According to Director Paul Feig

Why Bridesmaids 2 Probably Shouldn't Happen According to Director Paul Feig

Bridesmaids was that rare female-led comedy that went on to be a huge box-office hit, established itself as an iconic addition to its genre, and made overnight stars out of its cast, particularly Melissa McCarthy. With such a formidable legacy to live up to, director of the movie Paul Feig recently revealed to Collider why making a sequel would be a difficult task.
"Everybody thinks they want a Bridesmaids sequel, and it could be fun, but I always have to say this: Bridesmaids works-you remember all the comedy stuff, that was great, but the reason that movie worked is because it was about Kristen Wiig's character who was a very confident person before the movie began who has this total crash because her bakery goes out of business and everything falls apart in her life."
